Firmware 1.x, Firmware 2.x

If you have been following my Twit, you will know that one of my external hard disk crashed. Although it’s still under warranty, I needed a replacement fast so I bought a new Seagate FreeAgent Desk.
From experience, I’m not surprised at all afterwards to find once again there isn’t any Mac OS X icons for the 2009 models (you can get them for the “Classic” model, also made by yours truly, here.)
So… click here to download (1.01 MB) the set of icons.
They are cool 512×512 pixels giant icons for Leopard (Tiger compatible), and includes .icns files plus .png icons for the iPhone as well. Click here for a video tutorial on how to change icons.
PS. If you need icons for other devices and can’t find them on the ‘net… drop me a note below and I just might make them for you.

Earlier this week I bought a MacBook Pro….
I then found out I need a custom icon to represent it in my LAN… and I was surprised a quick Google search returned nil for the 2008 Unibody model. WTF?
So I made one myself. Thanks to img2icns it was easy and I’m very pleased with the results. In fact, I went on to make icons for the 17in model, and its little brother, the MacBook Amateur, too.
They are all full-size (512×512 pixels!) Leopard icons (Tiger compatible).
So if you are looking for the icons, here’s the download link (758kB). The download .dmg also includes custom icons for use in iPhone.
If you don’t know how to change icons in Mac OS X, then click to watch the above HD video tutorial I made for you. :p

I have previously written my reviews on SMSTool.
It has since been updated to include the much asked for function to delete individual messages. Once again, it’s intuitive to do so. Just look for the message to delete, do a left-swipe, and tap on the red Delete button, and the unwanted message is gone! And of course, should you decide to cancel that, just do a right-swipe to get rid of the Delete button.
SMSTool now also seamlessly integrates with Notes. You can save an SMS to it. What’s even more impressive is you can also retrieve existing notes and send it out as an SMS! I’m gonna start putting Notes to good use.
Despite the additional new functions, SMSTool remains simple and straight forward (no pun intended) to use, a hallmark of the fine programming skills of its author.

If you use 3rd party SMS apps such as QuickSMS, they often have an option to request for a SMS Delivery Notification. The default for various American telcos are available but one for Singapore’s largest telco, SingTel, was not readily known.

I asked about it at the Hardwarezone forum and toblos replied that it’s
#R#
It works!
After successfully delivering a SMS, you’ll receive a SMS reply as seen above. Yes, it’s ugly as it is not parse at all. Damn. Fortunately it’s not hard to decode the message. According to toblos, firmware 3.0 doesn’t look like it support parsing the notification either. So if someone could, please do.

One crucial function omitted by Apple’s SMS Texting app is the ability to forward SMS. There are already 3rd party apps that let you forward SMS, but most of them are not freeware. In fact, some are bloated.
I want a simple straight forward app that let me forward an SMS, and SMSTool (currently a beta release) by Siddarth Reddy, fits the bill perfectly. I’m able to forward a text intuitively on first try. It’s that simple. There’s also an option to forward an SMS via email instead. That should come in handy one day.
Siddarth mentioned to me he’s hard working on the option to delete an individual SMS, a function I desperately need to get rid of private texts better left in the trashcan. Apparently there’s some Apple Application quirks that he must overcome first, and we can all expect an update soon.
Oh, I made a custom icon for use by Gee Theme 2009, but here’s a generic one you could use if you’re not too crazy about its default icon. Simply save the icon and upload it to your theme’s /Icons/ folder.
Aren’t you glad you have a jailbroken iPhone?
